Recently, David Letterman made some jabbing jokes towards Sarah Palin and also included some snide one-liners about her well-known daughter who was brought into the public spotlight, pregnant and unwed, by Palin and the McCain campaign last year.

Sure, there’s an argument to be made about not “going after” the families of politicians. This argument should be made in fact, to comedians and journalists alike.

However, when a pillar of your platform is “family values” and your teen aged daughter is unwed and knocked up, the hypocrisy does sort of seem to be fair game, at least for late night humorists seeking edgy fodder.

Were Letterman’s jokes funny? That depends on who you ask. Does this seem like something worthy of being a raging issue? Well, if you look at the discussions and debates it has spawned around the web then apparently so.
